Heart-Shaped Box ties in with death. Justin Cowzynski, a mid-40 year old, ex-band player and guitarist finds himself surrounded by death. Justin went by Judas Coyne after moving out his father’s house. He had a band of three: Jude, . Both committed suicide and left Jude alone. Danny, his assistant, committed suicide after seeing the ghost. His mother passed away as well. Jude’s father, Martin, is sick to the point he is put into bed at home and is forced to eat through a feeding tube. Anna, Judas’ first love, committed suicide after he told her to go back home. Later in the story, his two dogs, Bon and Angus pass away from helping Jude through his adventure. He starts his adventure with Marybeth, or as Jude would call her “Georgia .” Georgia was the Goth type and had piercings. Jude liked that about her. She would not let Jude go alone on his road trip back to his father’s house. He thought going back home would let the ghost find its way back to the burned up suit. The ghost was known as Caddock. Judas called Jessica Price, which is the person that sold the suit to him. Jessica is Anna’s sister. Caddock is the father of the two. Caddock would try to get “revenge” on Jude for letting his precious daughter, Anna commit suicide. The dogs had a big black shadow inside their body that protected Judas and Georgia from Caddock for the most part. There are events where both Jude and Georgia are near death, but they fight their way through the pain. They contact Anna through an Ouija Board. Anna only showed how Georgia will die. Sooner than later, both of them make it to Jude’s father’s house. Caddock takes over Martin’s body and tries to kill both Georgia and Judas. Jude opens a door for Anna to come through and help defeat Caddock. The theme of death shows that death is around everyone, every second. Judas Coyne lost his family and all he has left is Georgia .

Dear Mr. Coyne,
After visiting you on that rainy day, I got paranoid about everything. Just visiting you and Ms. Georgia bought memories back. Thinking of what my mother have done just left me to be speechless. I’ve had feelings of being followed or watched every second and every move I make. I just have a feeling that my mother, that I do not want to claim as my own, committed suicide in jail and came to haunt me. I’m not sure if it’s true or not because I don’t care about her as much as before; not after what I found out what she did before. Lately, this black shadow, human-figure like thing has been standing outside my friend’s house by a bush. It’s always around 2 in the morning; I’m always awake around that time. I’m not sure what or who it is, but it scares me sometimes. The figure always holds this pendulum that has a knife at the end of it. The knife shines in the light and it captures my eyes. It’s eye capturing… But I just wanted you to know what has been happening with me; just a little catch up and all. Write back soon?
Sincerely,
Reese Price

Today, on March 26, 2011, a young 18-year-old girl has died from a slash through her throat. Her mother, Jessica Price, has been in jail since last year and will continue for the rest of her life. Reese Price was an elegant girl. She went to go stay with her friend. Her friend had said she has been seeing a black figure standing outside the window, by the bushes. Police officers and investigators have been on the search for a mysterious man standing outside the house. There has been no evidence of any man or women standing by the only push outside of her friend’s house. The investigators are clueless about who killed her. Some assume she committed suicide, but some believe her mother has escaped prison, killed her and ran back to jail. No one knows what truly happened.

Reflection
The genres I chose went well with the novel. The letter Reese wrote to Judas showed that Reese still thought of Judas after a year of seeing them. Judas knew something is going to happen to Reese, he just didn’t know when. So the letter showing that Reese was seeing a black figure was the start of her story. The instruction list was the best fit. It shows a person how to get rid of a haunting ghost off your tail. If anyone was in Judas’ and Marybeth’s position, they would know how to get out of it. The wanted poster for the pendulum was asking for anyone to find it. The poster is telling you that the pendulum is not the best thing to have or be around. Judas would get it and the put it in Caddocks’ grave. Lastly, the news article explained what happened to Reese. Reese Price has died with a slash through her throat; the marks of a pendulum slash. The article tells you what happens to Reese later on in life and what Judas had said about her, is true.
The most difficult experience I had was thinking of the theme of the novel and tying everything together. It took time for me to think of the genres I could use. The whole novel was about death after death. I actually like this project. The reason why I like this project is because it lets the reader want to read the novel. I learned that anything can tie into the theme of your novel.
